Sennett, Richard. The Civilisation of New Capitalism. New Haven, U.s.a.: Yale University Press, 2006.

The consequences of contemporary capitalism are double-faced, on one manus the unprecedented economical growth all over the world is undeniable, but on the other manus this growth has not been responded by economic equality and social stability. In fact, inequalities keep broadening, increasing pressure on people and institutions. In The Culture of New Commercialism, Richard Sennett questions the operation of global capitalism today, why the economical system is conflicting with personal values and degrading the conditions of work and workers. This volume, a compilation of three lectures delivered by Sennett in 2004 at Yale Academy, explains the development of the corporate culture in the last century and its furnishings today on society.

Sennett starts talking well-nigh hierarchy, explaining how Max Weber described a society shaped after a military model, in a pyramid-like system that first made possible social inclusion and promotion, arrangement and efficiency of time and politics of stability and equality. For Sennett the heist of this organization was in the '60s, simply many like him critiqued the situation arguing bureaucracy was producing the "iron muzzle" issue as well described by Weber, in which workers were trapped by a very rigid organisation, as workers lost the individuality and autonomy of their labor, but also their private liberty because they were forced to fit into this bureaucratic system. But the development of new technologies and the Bretton Woods agreement allowed a new corporate culture to emerge, and information technology was conceived to accomplish short, rather than long, term goals every bit shareholders demanded a quick revenue of their investment. The worker of this new civilisation needs to exist mobile, capable of moving in between tasks and to adapt constantly to new environments. Sennett explains that this new landscape eliminated the need for the worker to be skillful at something, every bit employers are no longer valuing skills or expertise, focusing more in the potential of the worker to perform the chore.

The effects are non just a new type of worker, just likewise a civilisation where stability and security are chimeric, loyalty is no longer needed as short-term goals lay downward the norms. These create what Sennet calls a "specter of uselessness" to today workers, equally new capitalism looks to more than efficient labor markets for outsourcing their product, faster means of product in automation and cheaper labor forcefulness in young workers. This creates a new ready of mind for workers, fearing for their survival, and the reaction comes framed in a new understanding of craftsmanship and meritocracy, as what is rightly washed and what is valid is now defined by short term goals. Modern flexible organizations disempower the working class equally its abilities are non essential to do things right, and because they are not essential they can't move up in the social ladder, they don't merit it. Or on the opposite side, workers achieving success in the curt-term have proven their merit and they are promoted. For Sennett, firms are the simply ones with the power to requite value to people, despite whatever they have accomplished.

This anxiety for survival translates into a new mode of politics, which is required too to fulfill brusk term expectations. Citizens are consumers of politics, which is why to Sennett politics are marketed as consumption goods which are falsely differentiated. The anxiety for short term results and the new meritocratic concept of social club give no room for trial and fault, so ideologies are forced to be mobile, to ready singular problems, to focus in "one-off transactions". For Sennett, this environment is hostile to progressive politics, fifty-fifty if politicians hateful to, as public perception will let them to work only if improvements become obvious quickly.

Sennett admits the irony of this situation to New Left sympathizers like himself, whom critiqued the "Iron Cage" effect of bureaucracy. Modern capitalism responded to their demands of dismantling the tight structure of the modern bureaucracy, just the effects are far from their wishes. To the failure of the culture of the new capitalism, Sennett proposes three solutions: narrative, usefulness and craftsmanship. And this is where the reader will find flaws in this work. For narrative, the author asks for a modify that gives the worker more time, that frees him from the constraint of pressures, and allows him to develop his own story. For this, Sennett proposes basic incomes that should give the individual a sense of stability and security. But how and on what ground? Modern basic income schemes have become stigma, and how will they return value to workers? For usefulness, the writer proposes to reward unpaid domestic labor and to promote volunteerism, all in all to make a indicate about the importance of the Country as the only employer to render legitimacy and condition to workers. But how could short-term politics promote voluntary service if workers don't accept the time to practise information technology? And being the Land the main employer, and the promoter of voluntary service, wouldn't that reproduce the Iron Cage effect that Sennett so much criticized? What would be the identify of the autonomy, the freedom and the personal initiative of the individual? And finally, craftsmanship, defined as "to do something well". This is how Sennett proposes to overturn the brusque-term style of doing things and valuing again the skills and noesis of workers. The author admits this is the hardest to reach, and so he doesn't even effort to explain how to practise information technology. But also he misunderstands that new capitalism today does value doing things correct. Permit's use his instance of a MP3 role player.

For Sennett, the MP3 actor embodies the wrongs of new capitalism, information technology'due south a auto that can shop a great amount of music data, incommunicable to anybody to brand a complete use of it; to him it mirrors how product processes and workers accept become isolated and automated to deliver quick flexible results. But Sennett can just see the short term effects of a MP3, he couldn't come across that narratives tin be built from sharing playlists and mp3 files, or how making music more accessible could be a manner to fight inequalities. But most strikingly, Sennett didn't run into his own mp3 is an iPod, a production commercialized by Apple, which ironically is the new capitalist corporation par excellence. Apple outpaced all their competitors offering reliable products and stressing the importance of blueprint, they are the perfect example of craftsmanship in the computer industry. Modern corporations are following the pb of Apple, Google or Facebook – they value noesis and skills, the market rewards them considering of the quality of their products and the development of their products is far from responding to short-term goals. So corporations today behave the way Sennett proposes they practice, merely the state of affairs remains the same.

Sennett succeeds to explain with admirable simplicity the complexities of new capitalism and how its consequences permeated and gradually created a culture that worsens the life of the majority. But information technology is in his opportunity for offering solutions where his discourse becomes outdated, confusing and out of affect. He fails to inspire readers, and it actually obviates the efforts of many policymakers and public and individual institutions to address the structural bug he critiques (which would be a cracking departing indicate to discuss possible solutions). Sennett continuously refers to the 1960s and he underestimates the impact technology has today on consumers for creating shared narratives, for reinforcing usefulness and for inventing a new way of craftsmanship. He understandably dedicated most of his volume to explain new capitalism, simply the strength of his conceptualizations disseminates to almost goose egg when he is required to face the reader and exhort him to react.

Most likely, these lectures were inspirational to the ones that had the opportunity to nourish, but the unlucky reader might be disappointed past the loss of hope and stamina towards the end of Sennett's discourse. The reader volition encounter that the author doesn't deepen in how the culture of new capitalism increases gender and race inequalities. Feminist readers will find inconclusive answers to questions similar: What's the role of gender in the building of this new culture? How male-dominated industries have affected the spirit of female workers? Why is not gender disinterestedness proposed as a solution to address the problems in leadership and motivation of workers and thus create a new civilization of work?

Even so, this book could be of swell use to policymakers, and also for scholars and students of labor, social structures and economic history. The style of Sennett demands a slow and analytical reading, and the examples based on his own experiences build a connection with the reader and inspires his empathy, hopefully melting the iron cage of unique idea that we notice ourselves in today.

This book examines some really important and interesting questions — how capitalism has evolved and how the changes touch on individuals and society (eg politics) — but I feel it didn't examine the issue in sufficient detail or provide enough evidence for its theses.

The commencement chapter, "bureaucracy", argues that mod capitalism has changed its form twice over since its emergence in Western Europe in the 19th century: first from being badly organized to a highly organized and hierarchical grade modeled subsequently Prussian armed services at the time, and and so irresolute to more flexible and less stable later the separation of buying and management, and the new structures cause anxiety and lower loyalty amongst workers. This is all very interesting stuff but I wish there were more evidence supporting the claims — the arguments are way too brief to make the points.

The second chapter, on talent — it wasn't actually clear what it was trying to say.

The tertiary one on politics points out some bug with politics in western countries merely I'm not sure if the diagnosis (that consumerism acquired them) is valid.

The last chapter proposes some solutions to problems raised in the book, including organizations outside of workplaces that serve workers need (since turnover is much higher) and UBI, seem good, merely again I'm not sure I agree with the diagnosis/"problems" they are meant to address.

Overall, the book covers really important topics, especially how gimmicky capitalism affects individuals and causes many social problems. However, the exposition seems bereft, and as a result I can't really say I agree with the diagnosis or that his proposed solutions accost issues he raised. A major problem is the author ofttimes makes claims around abstruse concepts like "narrative" — I think that's fine in principle but one has to exist careful not to brand hollow statements which terminate upwards a dance of concepts without much relation to reality, and I think the author fell in this trap (equally much of folklore and disquisitional theory tends to, in my stance — I may be biased).

This volume definitely got me thinking though and I'd love to read more books on related topics to understand them better.

Sennett.

...more

Insights seemed right: chronicling cultural changes post-Fordism. Nostalgia for the large bureaucracy was somewhat unconvincing. Three stars for large sweeping generalizations without much show or qualification.
Richard Sennett has explored how individuals and groups make social and cultural sense of textile facts -- most the cities in which they live and about the labour they do. He focuses on how people tin become competent interpreters of their ain experience, despite the obstacles society may put in their way. His enquiry entails ethnography, history, and social theory. Every bit a social annotator, Mr. Sen Richard Sennett has explored how individuals and groups brand social and cultural sense of material facts -- well-nigh the cities in which they live and about the labour they do. He focuses on how people tin become competent interpreters of their own experience, despite the obstacles society may put in their way. His enquiry entails ethnography, history, and social theory. As a social analyst, Mr. Sennett continues the pragmatist tradition begun by William James and John Dewey.

His first book, The Uses of Disorder, [1970] looked at how personal identity takes grade in the modern city. He then studied how working-class identities are shaped in modern society, in The Hidden Injuries of Class, written with Jonathan Cobb. [1972] A study of the public realm of cities, The Fall of Public Homo, appeared in 1977; at the stop of this decade of writing, Mr. Sennett sought to business relationship the philosophic implications of this work in Authority [1980].

At this point he took a pause from sociology, composing three novels: The Frog who Dared to Croak [1982], An Evening of Brahms [1984] and Palais Majestic [1987]. He and so returned to urban studies with two books, The Conscience of the Eye, [1990], a work focusing on urban blueprint, and Mankind and Stone [1992], a full general historical study of how bodily experience has been shaped by the development of cities.

In the mid 1990s, as the work-world of modern capitalism began to alter quickly and radically, Mr. Sennett began a project charting its personal consequences for workers, a projection which has carried him upward to the present 24-hour interval. The first of these studies, The Corrosion of Character, [1998] is an ethnographic account of how eye-level employees make sense of the "new economy." The second in the series, Respect in a World of Inequality, [2002} charts the furnishings of new ways of working on the welfare land; a third, The Culture of the New Capitalism, [2006] provides an over-view of change. Most recently, Mr. Sennett has explored more positive aspects of labor in The Craftsman [2008], and in Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Cooperation [2012].
